Adult Program:

Monday:  an educational group program is conducted by Dr. McKenna and covers all the major drugs of addiction, the disease concept of chemical dependency, and other selected topics in the addiction field.  The educational program also covers a strong introduction to the philosophy of 12-step programs, a review of the steps and introduction to Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous.  Although we do not implement the 12-steps in our progam, as clients progress through recovery, they are encouraged to begin regular attendance at 12-step meetings to establish a system of support for themselves in the community since this will be a mainstay of their continued recovery once they leave the McKenna Recovery Center.

Tuesday:  independent men's and women's groups occur on Tuesday evening to address the particular issues of men and women and recovery. This gives both groups an opportunity to discuss issues they might be reluctant to discuss in a mixed group.

Wednesday:  the Wednesday group particularly targets people in early recovery, teaching them the hallmarks of addiction and the process of recovery.  This group also focuses on learning relapse prevention techniques through the understanding of the danger signs of relapse and the importance of taking early prevention action.

Friday:  Friday is a multifamily group which discusses in broad terms the impact of addiction on family systems.  It offers an opportunity for spouses, children and parents to deal with their own complex feelings regarding addiction in their family member and work to resolve issues in a setting where it is safe to express your feelings and access the support of other families going through the same process.

Adolescent Program:

Monday: the adolescents attend the educational program along with the adults. This allows adolescents to interact with adults in recovery. Both groups lend invaluable experience to the educational process of the other. It also allows the adolescents to realize what a serious illness addiction is if it progresses to adulthood, and gives the adults an opportunity to role model recovery.

Wednesday: the Wednesday program involves a process group as well as a structured learning program.

Friday: Friday evening the adolescents and their parents attend the multifamily group.
